Oxygen extraction for a mission life supportResearch conducted to extract oxygen from air or water with possible applications to oxygen production on Mars, the moon, or the Space Station is discussed. The technology under development involves an electrochemical process which is energy-efficient, regenerative and, in combination with a fuel cell, will provide net positive power, and generate oxygen for life support systems. The history of chemical oxygen separation and details of the oxygen separation technology are presented.
