The decrease of Lake Chad as documented during twenty years of manned space flightSpace photography has been successfully used to extend the space remote sensing data base for environmental monitoring by a decade. In this study of Lake Chad, space photographs were digitized and registered to a topographic base map before water classifications were performed. From 1966 to 1985 over a 21,000-square-kilometer decrease in lake surface area was observed.
