Finite element computation of hypersonic flow past a complete bodyThe finite element method was applied to compressible flows past complete blunt bodies in a first attempt to use the method to model hypersonic flow past re-entry vehicles. A Runge-Kutta time marching scheme was utilized and was found to adequately handle the bow shock and downstream wake. Adaptive refinement was successively applied to the flow field grid, and improvement in solution accuracy was observed. The results reported in this paper include the flow past a circular cylinder at Mach 3, and the flow in the plane of symmetry for the flow past a sphere at Mach 10.
