Alfven propulsion at JupiterThe operation of an electrodynamic tether at Jupiter is investigated. The pertinent Jupiter environments are investigated, and analytic expressions are derived for the induced electric field and the voltage, current, and force for an electrodynamic tether as a function of the radial distance from Jupiter. The formulas are combined with environmental models to arrive at quantitative values for the above parameters. The results are used to investigate propulsion applications.
