Star formationObservational studies of star formation are reviewed. The structure and properties of molecular clouds are discussed. The conditions for gravitational collapse are presented, including the thermal, rotational, and magnetic limits. Both high- and low-mass star formation are examined. A model for molecular clouds is given, which includes photoionization-regulated star formation.
