STS payload design load evolutionPayload development and design load requirements for the U.S. National Space Transportation System (STS) are discussed. The STS requires that all payloads be compatible with STS verification loads which are calculated approximately one year prior to launch. Payload design and all verification testing are completed prior to this final load cycle. Various approaches to preliminary design loads, load updates, and test load definitions and also to STS model and forcing functions revisions are presented.
