Planned ER-2 Doppler radar (EDOP) for studying convective storms and mesoscale phenomenaA radar development is presently funded by the NASA Mesoscale Atmospheric Research Program to build an X-band Doppler radar (EDOP) for the ER-2 aircraft for measuring the structure of updrafts and downdrafts in deep convective systems. In this paper, the radar's scientific objectives and characteristics are briefly reviewed. These objectives include documentation of deep isolated thunderstorms, examination of cloud top and anvil structure, structure of microscale convective systems, cloud microphysics, and testing of satellite precipitation estimation algorithms. System specifications for the radar are given.
