Effects of very high turbulence on heat transferThe effects of very high free stream turbulence on heat transfer were investigated experimentally by placing a flat plate, constant temperature heat transfer surface in a large diameter turbulent-free jet. The heat transfer rates measured were two to four times greater than those that would be predicted by accepted correlations for turbulent boundary layers. Thus, rather than establish a particular high turbulence flow field and then measure its effect on heat transfer, search for a flow field with very aggressive heat transfer characteristics and description of the aspects of the free stream turbulence associated with high levels of heat transfer is examined.
