Ion drag for a negatively biased solar array in low earth orbitHighly biased solar arrays in the space environment are found to have a number of significant interactions with the space environment. The enhanced drag suffered by highly biased solar arrays is studied with the particle-in-cell code. The results are compared to recent numerical work. The drag calculations contain the effect of having the conductor surrounded by dielectrics as well as the charging of the dielectric by electrons. The results are used to calculate the attitude change expected on the high-voltage solar array of the Japanese Space Flyer Unit.
