Low-Noise Charge-Coupled DeviceSame quantity measured many times to reduce uncertainty. "Skipper" charge-coupled device (CCD) underlines development of new class of imaging detectors exhibiting exceptionally low readout noise. Operates on nondestructive-readout scheme combined with other advances in CCD technology to reduce average readout noise to less than 1 electron rms. Concept has potential for improving video images made at ultra-low light levels, involving only few incoming photons per picture element (pixel).
