Combustion Phenomena in Relationship to Microgravity ResearchThe conservation equations of combustion are presented, with relevant nondimensional parameters identified, for focusing on the role of buoyancy in combustion processes. The objective is to indicate ways in which microgravity combustion experiments enable regimes of fluid mechanics, not readily investigated in combustion at normal gravity, to be studied more carefully for chemically reacting flows with heat release. Descriptions are given of self-extinguishing flames, of flames balls, of double flames, and of the slow regime of droplet combustion, as examples in which microgravity experiments have revealed new combustion phenomena. A classification of experiments is offered, concerning combustion regimes and flow regimes, within which microgravity combustion studies can be placed. Projects on premixed flame propagation, gas-jet diffusion flames, flame spread, smoldering combustion, and droplet combustion are considered, within this classification, as potential areas for future advances in understanding of combustion phenomena through microgravity experiments.
