Precision alignment of an infrared imaging systemThe optical hardware design and methods of alignment for the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) imaging instrument are discussed. The instrument is a multi-channel space-borne meteorological system. Included will be the results of a tolerance and sensitivity analysis for the optics and their adjustment mechanisms. A brief summary of the sequence of system alignment steps taken to achieve the final configuration of the instrument will conclude the discussion.
