Making Crystal Filaments From Extruded Ceramic RodsNew process produces single-crystal fibers of ceramic or metal at lower cost. Single-crystal filament drawn from tip of extruded polycrystalline rod. Extrusion produces longer rods from which longer fibers drawn. Potentially feeds single fiber drawing process directly. Continuous filaments made, and material not subjected to contamination from storage and transfer to drawing machine. Filaments used as reinforcing fibers in composite materials.
