Lessons learned in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope softwareThe lessons learned in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope software are described. Those aspects of the development that were successful are discussed. Areas which in retrospective analysis could have been more efficient are identified. It is concluded that few hardware oriented project managers understand or are comfortable with software technology. Most managers overestimate the size and magnitude of the complex tasks assigned.
