NASA's In-Space Technology Experiments Program - Status and plansThe Space Station Freedom constitutes a space facility uniquely suited to space technology-related R&D. Such test data as those involving fluids (power, thermal management, life support systems, and payload operations), space structures, and space materials, cannot be realistically obtained on the ground. The Space Station will also allow the validation of technologies that promise either higher performance or lower costs but which, if not validated in the necessary environment, could pose unacceptable program risks.
