Space Station Freedom - An overviewNASA's Space Station Freedom has been designed with a built-in upgrading capability. Permanently manned status is scheduled for fiscal year 2000; it will at that point be able to offer its users fully 30 kW of electrical power, by means of which either numerous experiments can be run simultaneously, or a single piece of unique hardware with high power requirements can be supplied the power. During this permanently manned phase, NASA will contribute, in addition to the three power modules furnishing 30 kW, a 27-ft long laboratory module with 12 user racks, and equally long habitation module for a crew of 4, and design features allowing growth to accommodate a crew of 8 and power supplies of 75 kW.
