Hypersonic flow simulations using DSMC (direct simulation Monte Carlo)A review of the DSMC method of Bird is presented. The DSMC method provides the capability of simulating real gas flows in the rarefied flow regime. Recent developments and applications of the method for hypersonic flows are reported for both ground-based tests and during entry. Results obtained using both axisymmetric and 3D codes are included.
