The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics FacilityThe contributions that the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) is expected to make in key areas of astronomical investigation are examined. Emphasis is given to the planned AXAF investigations of galaxy clusters, dark matter, and the distance scale of the universe. Properties of stars and quasars that AXAF will address are considered, and the most important AXAF characteristics are listed.
