ACRV derived transportation systemAlternate means for manned transportation to low earth orbit are being considered by NASA to complement and eventually replace the Space Shuttle. One method of achieving two-way transportation is through the modification of Assured Crew Return Vehicle (ACRV). The ACRV is a manned transportation system designed to bring home Space Station Freedom crews in the event of an emergency or Shuttle standdown. The ACRV is launched in the Space Shuttle-payload bay and is designed for earth return from low earth orbit. A study was performed that addressed the modification of an ACRV into a two-way manned transportation system. The Station Crew Return Alternate Module (SCRAM) configuration was chosen as the reference ACRV vehicle. This paper will discuss the requirements and ground rules used in the study as well as the design modifications made to the ACRV.
