Practical considerations in waverider applicationsThis paper proposes a practical perspective for waverider shapes with respect to their use in the commercial and military aerospace industry. Also, integration problems that must be considered when deriving these shapes for operational aircraft are discussed and general approaches to solving them are suggested. The inverse design methodology that is used to generate waverider geometries is discussed as a potentially powerful tool for the aerospace industry in the design of practical operational high-speed (Mach 4 to 25) aircraft. Further, it is suggested that unless this methodology proves to be a valuable tool in the near future, it will not likely find a customer in the aerospace industry and may become no more than an interesting academic study in aerodynamic optimization.
