Shock waves and the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equationThe expansion of the double divergence of the generalized Lighthill stress tensor, which is the basis of the concept of the role played by shock and contact discontinuities as sources of dipole and monopole sound, is presently applied to the simplest transonic flows: (1) a fixed wing in steady motion, for which there is no sound field, and (2) a hovering helicopter blade that produces a sound field. Attention is given to the contribution of the shock to sound from the viewpoint of energy conservation; the shock emerges as the source of only the quantity of entropy.
