A deformable mirror concept for adaptive optics in spaceA concept for correcting long wave low order distortions of a lightweight composite mirror for space applications is described. One of the attractive features of this concept for space applications is that a backup structure is not required. The actuation system consists of piezoelectric elements, attached directly to the back of the mirror surface. The system is self balancing. This paper describes the test results for a one-half meter curved composite reflector.
