Planetary fluids at high shock pressures and temperaturesThe electrical conductivity of liquid H2 was measured at shock pressures in the range 10-20 GPa and shock temperatures in the range 3000-4500 K. Electrical conductivities of H2 are needed for kinematic or dynamo calculation of the magnetic fields of Jupiter and Saturn. Conductivity measurements also enable observations of the narrowing of the electronic energy bandgap of dense H2 with density as its approaches metallization.
