Atmospheric sounding with the Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE)The Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE) is being developed by NASA Langley Research Center for a series of flights on the Space Shuttle. Using a three-wavelength Nd:YAG laser and a 1-meter-diameter telescope, the system will be used to study clouds, aerosols in the troposphere and stratosphere, density and temperature perturbations of the stratosphere, and characteristics of the planetary boundary layer. Data collected from the system will be used in studies of atmospheric dynamics, meteorology, climate, the radiation budget, biogeochemical processes, and the hydrologic cycle. Additionally, the data will be used to develop retrieval techniques optimized for a spaceborne configuration and to develop requirements for future operational spaceborne lidar systems.
