Mechanics of metal matrix composites - A program review

A brief summary is presented of an experimental program to study metal matrix composites (MMCs) for NASA vehicles of the future. The purpose of the research is to (1) develop a composite understanding of the mechanics of MMCs and their related failure modes, (2) develop a micromechanics understanding of MMCs to help develop improved MMCs, and (3) develop the appropriate life design criteria.
