A concise introduction to MARCThe record structure, content designation and data content that make up a MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) record are described. Distinguishing characteristics of the MARC record structure are identified and content designations are defined. The use of MARC as both an American national standard (ANSI Z39.2) and an international standard (ISO 2709) is noted. The relational between MARC and the Standardized General Markup Language (SGML) is explored and areas of overlap are identified.
