Open system environmentsAn open system is defined as a system that implements open specifications for interfaces, services, and supporting formats to enable properly engineered applications software to be ported with minimal changes across a wide range of systems; and to interact with users in a style which facilitates user portability. Based on that definition, a reference model for an open system environment is presented.
