Understanding planetary rings

The rings in the solar system and the mathematical and physical approaches to understanding them are described. The variety of ring phenomena revealed in recent years from space and earth-based observations is emphasized. Ideas for the recent history of rings are examined in some detail. The major open questions and future opportunities to learn about planetary rings are discussed.
