ASCA observations of supernova remnantsThe combined spectral and imaging capabilities of the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) provides new possibilities for studying supernova remnants. The most powerful of these are spatially resolved, moderate resolution spectroscopy and narrowband spectral imaging. The use of these techniques yielded a number of results that challenge the currently held views on X-ray emission processes in supernova remnants. Evidence was found for the plasmas in which a different ionization timescale must be used to characterize each metal. Some recent findings from supernova remnant surveys conducted using ASCA are presented.
