En-route Sector Buffering CapacityUsing point mass dynamic model for aircraft, we investigate the efficiency of velocity control in the case of an en-route sector subject to an output rate restriction. Velocity control can only be a temporary solution to the problem of an input rate larger than the output rate. This translates into a maximum number of aircraft that can be controlled before a bottom speed limit is reached. We, derive this number, both analytically and through simulations. Two control strategies are simulated and analyzed and their differences are exhibited.
