Sub-Nyquist Sampling and Moire-Like Waveform DistortionsInvestigations of aliasing effects in digital waveform sampling have revealed the existence of a mathematical field and a pseudo-alias domain lying to the left of a "Nyquist line" in a plane defining the boundary between two domains of sampling. To the right of the line lies the classic alias domain. For signals band-limited below the Nyquist limit, displayed output may show a false modulation envelope. The effect occurs whenever the sample rate and the signal frequency are related by ratios of mutually prime integers. Belying the principal of a 10:1 sampling ratio being "good enough", this distortion easily occurs in graphed one-dimensional waveforms and two-dimensional images and occurs daily on television.
