Gamma-Ray Burst Subclasses: Separating Instrumental Biases from Potential Source PopulationsInstrumental effects mar gamma-ray burst observations. These effects can alter whether or not bursts trigger, as well as changing measured burst properties. The Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on NASA's Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has provided the largest database of gamma-ray bursts observed to date. It also provides an excellent laboratory for studying instrumental biases. We examine trigger biases and burst property biases as they pertain to previously identified gamma-ray burst classes. We also study some burst class properties in the new age of burst afterglow studies.
