Condition Monitoring of Helicopter Gearboxes by Embedded SensingHealth of helicopter gearboxes is commonly assessed by monitoring the housing vibration, thus it is challenged by poor signal-to-noise ratio of the signal measured away from the source. It is hypothesized that vibration measurements from sensors placed inside the gearbox will be much clearer indicators of faults and will eliminate many of the difficulties faced by present condition monitoring systems. This paper outlines our approach to devising such a monitoring system. Several tasks have been outlined toward this objective and the strategy to address each has been described. Among the tasks are wireless sensor design, antenna design, and selection of sensor locations.
