MEA Failure Mechanisms in PEM Fuel Cells Operated on Hydrogen and OxygenPolymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are candidates to replace alkaline fuel cells for space power programs. Broad power ranges, high peak to nominal power ratio, and low maintenance costs are the major advantages in comparison to alkaline and other fuel cell technologies. The probability of using PEM fuel cells in space power applications will increase if the minimum 10,000h life is demonstrated with hydrogen and oxygen.
