Conductive hydrogel containing 3-ioneneCationic polyelectrolytes formed by the polymerization in absence of oxygen of a monomer of the general formula: dispersed ##STR1## where x is 3 or more than 6 and Z is I, Br or Cl to form high charge density linear polymers are dispered in a water-soluble polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol to form a conductive hydrogel.
