MERRA: Progress, Applications, and Challenges for the FutureThis presentation gives an overview of the results from the Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) project, an atmospheric global reanalysis, recently completed at the NASA/Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). Comparisons are made with previous and other recent reanalyses to highlight improvements as well as remaining challenges regarding the quality of the reanalyses on diurnal to decadal and longer time scales. Several examples will be presented that highlight some of the strengths of the MERRA product in addressing issues of climate variability on subseasonal to interannual time scales.
