The Power of Active Optical TechniquesUnderstanding climate and climate change requires characterizing and quantifying the individual components of the Earth energy budget. Satellite lidar now provides new capabilities to improve the characterization of cloud and aerosol impacts on the radiation budget. This talk will discuss fundamentals of the lidar remote sensing, current applications of data from the CALIOP spaceborne lidar to climate studies, and discuss prospects for constraining the energy budget using satellite lidars now in development.
