Considerations for Radiator Design in Multi-Megawatt Nuclear Electric Propulsion ApplicationsA key performance parameter determining the feasibility and performance of a multi-megawatt nuclear electric vehicle is the power systems specific mass (mass per unit of electric power output). The specific mass of the main radiators is the largest single element within the power system and can be greatly affected by numerous assumptions and design considerations. Among these are the number of parallel fluid loops, the overall geometry and view factor of the radiator, and for high temperature systems the method for accommodating the temperature limit of water heat pipes. Analyses are performed to develop an understanding of this trade space to enable a more accurate mass estimate and to help guide technology development efforts.
