Overview of Past Space Nuclear Reactor Functional Safety Principles in the Context of Recent Policy ChangesSpace nuclear reactor technology development and associated approaches to safety have been ongoing for over 60 years. This paper selects functional safety principles associated with space reactors at several points in time since the early 1980s and provides an overview of their general content, similarities, and differences, as well as how they have evolved. It also reflects, where applicable, on how recent Federal policies in the area of space nuclear systems may affect how these safety principles apply to future activities.
