High-Temperature Solid Particle Erosion Behavior of an Environmental Barrier CoatingThe solid particle erosion (SPE) behavior of a state-of-the-art environmental barrier coating (EBC) was assessed at 2,192 °F (1,200 °C) using alumina (Al2O3) particulate. The effect of particle velocity, particle size, and impingement angle were investigated. Results show that the erosion damage in the EBC is primarily controlled by particle kinetic energy. In addition, the effect of impingement angle demonstrates the contribution of the tangential component of velocity.
