Exploration of Lithium Metal Battery Nondestructive Evaluation at NASA Langley Research CenterIn this presentation, we provide an overview of proof-of-concept research at NASA Langley Research Center directed at advancing nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of lithium metal batteries. The efforts were conducted under the multi-year project “Sensor-based Prognostics to Avoid Runaway Reactions and Catastrophic Ignition” (SPARRCI). Topics covered include: development and advancement of local resonance-based ultrasonic inspection, guided wave assessments, X-Ray inspection, multimodal NDE data registration, and data fusion. We will discuss challenges in NDE application to complex layered and porous media, along with ways that these NDE approaches converge to advance our capabilities in battery inspection.
