Towards the HWO Greater Instrument Complement - Science Drivers and Capabilities

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) will carry a complement of next generation astrophysics instruments capable of transformational astrophysics, in addition to the coronagraphs needed for the exoplanet science. The astronomical community has recently submitted ~70 science case documents that outline the science the mission could be capable of doing, aligned with the priorities of the 2020 Decadal Survey. We will discuss the three baseline instruments being considered: the ultraviolet multi-object spectrograph (UV-MOS), the ultraviolet integral field spectrograph (UV-IFS), and the widefield ultraviolet-optical-infrared camera (HRI). In each case we will summarize the capabilities being demanded by the science cases and what those capabilities imply about instrument and observatory design. We will also consider the necessary technologies for those instruments and their development path as HWO seeks to approach MCR in the next 5 years.
