The environment and materials for glide reentry vehiclesThe environmental conditions to which a large glide reentry vehicle such as the space shuttle is subjected is discussed. A comparison is made with the state of the art for materials and structures to meet this environmental threat. The options that are available are stressed as are the areas where additional research and development is required.
