Laundering in space - A summary of recent developments.Clothing must be washed and reused on future long duration space missions to maintain personal hygiene without severe weight penalties of stored clothing. Laundering equipment that may operate in the absence of gravity is being developed. Weight savings expected from this equipment are illustrated in this paper that describes a six-man combined clothes washer/dryer engineering prototype. Also included in the paper is the rationale used in selecting the final prototype design as well as a discussion of major factors affecting design and performance.
