Fracture under combined modes in 4340 steelAn experimental investigation was conducted to study the interaction of combined modes of loading on crack instability in the presence of the opening and sliding modes of stress intensity factors, the opening and tearing modes of stress intensity factors, and all three modes of stress intensity factors. Through-cracked and surface-cracked flat and round specimens, and round notched bar specimens fabricated from high strength 4340 steel were used for the investigation. The results are evaluated to determine fracture criteria under the combined modes of stress intensity factors for the 4340 steel. These results are compared with the results of other investigators obtained for different materials.
