Effective use of Landsat for range monitoring and management - An example on a regional scaleSome results of a study undertaken in the Great Plains region to evaluate the use of Landsat for monitoring rangeland ecosystems are briefly summarized. A vegetation parameter, the Transformed Vegetation Index (TVI), was developed as a green biomass indicator. It was determined that for rangelands with good vegetative cover, and which are not heavily infested with brush, green biomass can be estimated in increments of 250-300 kg/ha with a 95% probability. At least five levels of range feed conditions can be mapped with TVI data using the MSS Band 6.
