Up-date of traveling wave tube improvementsNASA research in the area of traveling wave tube technology is reviewed, with emphasis on the basic physics of guns and collectors and a computer model for the interaction between the electron beam and the RF circuit. The design of a multistage depressed collector, capable of multiplying tube efficiency by a factor of two or more, is presented; one such design has been adopted for commercial traveling wave tube production. A three-dimensional model of electron trajectories toward the collector also receives attention, as does the problem of RF circuit losses.
