The ultraviolet markings on Venus - An analysis of the Venera 9 dataThe results of Venera 9 measurements of the emergent intensity from the cloud tops of Venus are surveyed. It is reported that these radiance distributions at 3500 A contain information on the vertical and horizontal structure of the clouds and show the effects of the small and large scale ultra violet markings. Attention is given to model calculations with a Mie phase function for 1.05 micron sulfuric acid aerosols which indicate that the clouds have a layered structure. It is stressed that large-scale horizontal inhomogeneities (in excess of 1000 km) must be considered to supplement any analysis based on a horizontally homogeneous model. It is shown that the shape of the observed radiance distributions is affected by the ultraviolet 'Y' feature and the equatorial band.
