ASPS performance with large payloads onboard the Shuttle OrbiterA high fidelity digital computer simulation was used to establish the viability of the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) for satisfying the pointing and stability requirements of facility class payloads, such as the Solar Optical Telescope, when subjected to the Orbiter disturbance environment. The ASPS and its payload were subjected to disturbances resulting from crew motions in the Orbiter aft flight deck and VRCS thruster firings. Worst case pointing errors of 0.005 arc seconds were experienced under the disturbance environment simulated; this is well within the 0.08 arc seconds requirement specified by the payload.
