Penetrative convectionThe current state of understanding of the most directly observable solar convection, the granulation and supergranulation is summarized. The body of work in which the complete time dependent Navier-Stokes equations and entropy transport equation are solved for a fully compressible atmosphere is considered. Relevant anelastic and incompressible calculations in two dimensions are also discussed.
